Blossoms return with Songs From the Wedding Cake, a bright, romantic album that gives me plenty to enjoy. I would have liked a little more depth, but that reservation never outweighed the pleasure of listening. A very good all-round record, and an 8.5/10 for me.
Blossoms’ Songs From the Wedding Cake
Released on 2 October 2026, Songs From the Wedding Cake is the Stockport band’s sixth studio album, following 2024’s Gary. Shawn Lee produced the ten-track record, which was recorded entirely to tape.
The title comes from the nickname for Stockport Town Hall, where frontman Tom Ogden got married. That gives the album’s focus on love and relationships a very personal starting point.
The Songs That Make It Work
“Fall Into You”, “Meet Me in Love” and “Uma Thurman” are among the tracks I would point people towards first.
They also show why reducing the album to its lyrical limitations would miss too much of what it does well. The musical side gives these songs personality: the lighter atmosphere of “Fall Into You”, the dancefloor pull of “Meet Me in Love” and the movement of “Uma Thurman”.
A Little More Depth Would Help
My main reservation is that I wanted more beneath the surface.
The love and relationship themes make sense in the context of the album. They are also subjects that can support an enormous range of emotions and perspectives. At points, I wanted the record to explore more of that range.
The Reviews Reflect That Split
Reading other reactions afterwards, I recognised parts of my own response. Silent Radio’s review praises the hooks and changes in musical style while finding the relationship themes repetitive later in the album.
On: Yorkshire Magazine is more enthusiastic about the balance between romance, playfulness and the funk and soul elements.
Blossoms Still Know the Value of Melody
We included Blossoms in our look at the lasting influence of Britpop on modern British bands. This album is another reminder of how useful strong melody remains, even as a band’s sound moves into different territory.
Since the release, we’ve also covered Blossoms’ DIY approach and the album’s chart battle. It put them alongside Johnny Marr, whose The Age of Everything I also reviewed.
Final Verdict
Songs From the Wedding Cake is a very good album. I enjoyed the whole listen, and its lighter, melodic side gives it plenty of appeal.
A little more depth would have taken it further for me. That is a meaningful reservation, but it does not erase how much I liked it.
